Awakening Of Memories by Andrew Merkler
The author, Andrew Merkler, searched far and wide to find out about his extended, talented and hard-working Jewish family. Long resident in Britain he visited Hungary, where he was born, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Sub-Carpathia, Germany and Austria.
He discovered that the Merklers hail from Germany and his relatives included Lajos Merkler who around 1920 developed the largest paprika mill in the world.
His relatives includes doctors, farmers, businessmen, a poverty stricken publican, a composer/music critic and the world famous film producer/director, Sir Alexander Korda, his generous benefactor in his early years. The women include attractive figures who held the family together and afloat in turbulent times. Andrew Merkler's father wrote the scripts of more than 30 Hungarian movies, some of which are regarded as classics. His lyrics of numerous songs of the 1930/40's are popular to this day.
The book contains the story of prominent people and relatives, saints and lesser mortals, seasoning the story with humour when the occasion permits. The memory of those, including his father and brother, who perished in the Holocaust are kept alive.
Andrew Merkler has written plays of his own and translated several Hungarian plays which have been staged in England and New Zealand. His portrait is the work of the distinguished artist, Laszlo Gyemant.
