Antique Ball Jars

Description: In 1880 the Ball brothers, William, Lucius, Lorenzo, Frank, Edmund andGeorge started producing jars for canning. Originally made from wood that was wrapped in metal, four years later they started producing the glass mason jars that we would easily recognise today. After a fire burned down their original plant in Buffalo New York, they were offered land and free gas in Muncie, Ohio where gas had just been discovered. They were totally unscrupulous in their methods and takeovers, squeezing small companies out in ways which we would recognise today. Few rivals, a good transport system and that was the start of the mass production that eventually produced 5 billion and 904 million Ball jars between 65 years.
