freetrademath.org: Mathematicians Against Free Trade
A handful of concerned mathematicians have concluded, upon preliminary examination of the available evidence, that contrary to conventional wisdom international free trade is a matter about which reasonable minds can differ. In particular, the “fundamental theorem of international trade” (aka Ricardo’s principle of comparative advantage) merits close scrutiny. Does it belong to the class of “eternal verities” proclaimed by mainstream economists, or is it—to borrow a phrase from Giles Raveaud, leader of the students who took to the streets of Paris in June 2000 to protest the teaching of economics in French universities—just another “complex mathematical model that works only in conditions that never exist?” Recent history suggests that far too many such models now influence current events. In order to prepare and encourage mathematicians to participate in debate on this timely subject, we have prepared a short annotated reading list.
