Description: It was 1999 on one of those steaming hot July Saturday afternoons in New York. A group of us, four girlfriends were lounging in my cramped living room after one of our weekly hair twisting sessions. We were jostling about who had the best looking set of dreads. Of course, each person thought theirs looked the best, and was not too modest to say so. “Wouldn’t it be great if we could find blouses that expressed how great we feel about our hair?” I said while trying to gain control of the mirror. “Yeah, but where we gonna find those?” “Maybe we could make our own.” I said. The contending stopped as we all warmed up to the idea of making our own tops, tops that said something about who were and expressed how we felt about ourselves.
