Smout Allen Architectural Design Research Practice

Description: Mark Smout and Laura Allen are Senior Lecturers at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where they teach Diploma Unit 11 (Eleven). They are noted for their teaching which regularly features in the RIBA student medals, their publication Augmented Landscapes, Princeton Architectural Press, Pamphlet Architecture 28, and winning the Royal Academy AJ Bovis Architecture Prize. The work takes two routes, architectural competitions, where the particular rigour of the competition brief, site and program provide the basis for new investigations and, conceptual design projects which test out the agenda and methodology of the design research practice. The focus is on the dynamic relationship between the natural and the man made and how this can be revealed to enhance the experience of the architectural landscape.
