Kids At Risk Action (KARA) is non-profit advocacy network focusing on issues related to neglected and abused children. Founded by Mike Tikkanen, a businessman turned socially-concerned citizen, KARA works to educate individuals and communities about the need to protect the rights of children. In 1997, Mike Tikkanen began working as a part-time volunteer guardian ad-Litem (GAL) for Hennepin County in Minnesota. A guardian is a court-appointed advocate for children in the child protection system. Mike is connected with over 50 children who have passed through child protection. Two of those children have been of his life for over ten years. This experience led him to found Kids At Risk Action (KARA) and to write his book, Invisible Children to increase awareness about issues that abused and neglected children face and to impact the laws that affect their lives.
