Chrispy Critter After Burn Gel Chrispy Critter After Burn Gel. Two Ph.D. science geeks set out to develop the best sunburn remedy on the market. Chris (B.S. Chemical Engineering, Ph.D. Biomedical Engineering) and Cory (B.S. Chemistry, Ph.D. Pharmacology and Toxicology), and their friends and family, were frustrated by the necessity of frequent application of current sunburn treatments. On a Boy Scout trip, it was recommended to Cory to develop a sunburn remedy that would have quick but long lasting effect and take away the sting of sunburn without the use of pharmaceuticals (e.g. numbing agents like benzocaine and lidocaine, which, incidentally, irritate sunburned skin and make the condition worse). Why is it necessary to constantly apply products that are on the market? Available treatments do not address the underlying physiological responses to sunburn. Aloe prevents sunburned skin from drying out and peeling, but does nothing to alleviate pain or discomfort. After extensive research (hey, that is what Ph.D.s do), they developed a unique, low pH, gel formulation that both mitigates discomfort and prohibits over drying of the skin. The duo created a breakthrough method to incorporate vinegar into a moisturizing aloe. Vinegar is a time-honored home remedy for sunburn, but unfortunately, straight vinegar stinks and is messy to apply. By discovering a way to incorporate vinegar into an aloe gel base and including Vitamin E to combat free radical formation in the skin during the sunburn process, they developed a unique product that is based on solid science.
