Operation Red Wings, Operation Whalers, and the book VICTORY POINT in which they are comprehensively documented / Ed Darack Operation Red Wings and Operation Whalers, which occurred in an area in which I was embedded with the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment (Pech River region west of Asadabad) in Afghanistan. Both Red Wings (often incorrectly referred to as Operation Redwing or Operation Redwings) and Operation Whalers were planned and carried out by the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment. Marine planners utilized special operations forces (Navy Special Operations-SEALs and 160th SOAR(A)-Army special operations aviation) for the opening phase of Operation Red Wings. Due to the ensuing disaster, which resulted in the greatest single-day loss of life for the Navy SEALs and the 160th SOAR(A), virtually nothing has been mentioned of the Marine Corps involvement in the planning and execution of this operation, nor of the ensuing related operation where the Marines achieved the objective originally set forth for Red Wings.
