Good alignment of the propeller shaft is the starting point to have a low level of noise and vibration on board, and to also have a reduced maintenance schedule. There are many products on the market that try to solve the problem of good alignment with different systems, like rubber couplings, cardan units, thrust bearings etc.
The only way to solve the problem is to use constant velocity joints because they make it possible to rotate the propeller shaft without transmitting the engines movement and vibrations, but systems on the market at this moment are often expensive because they require the shaft line to be modified and can also require lengthy installation time.
They can also create maintenance problems because, if not perfectly installed, they can become hot and then fail.
This is why Unimec s.r.l. designed Sigmadrive to finally resolve the problem of propeller shafts misalignment and maintenance onboard.

SIGMADRIVE is a constant velocity joint that can resist propeller thrust without the need of bearings. Installed at the same place of standard shaft couplings it reduces or even eliminates noise and vibration, originated by an imperfect alignment between propeller shaft and engine. It is also possible to fit SIGMADRIVE as an angular corrector as it can compensate for up to 8° (4° 4°) of misalignment.
SIGMADRIVE has been developed to substitute the need to use shaft joints with thrust bearings, thus making the dimensions very compact and similar to a standard shaft coupling. Instillation is quick and easy without the need to modify the propeller shaft of the vessel.
SIGMADRIVE allows the propeller shaft to self-align between rubber bearings and shaft seals and will therefore give longer life to all propulsion system components By installing Sigmadrive you will have your propeller shaft system always accurately aligned.
It is manufactured from a special bronze alloy that makes it possible to have a premium product that doesnt create problems of maintenance and heat generation and also provides a hard-wearing component with a long service life. No bearings or rubber are included in the construction and Sigmadrive cancels out vibration and compensates for each movement and vibration of the engine.
SIGMADRIVE is available as standard for engines from 10 bhp to 1300 bhp and is the only system on the market that can be installed with VDRIVE gearboxes.
