Past work has included generalized methods (Bryant 2009; Everest et al. 1991), and reach and watershed quantitative methods to measure habitat (Bryant et al. 2004a; Bryant et al. 1991) as well as methods to estimate fish abundance (Bryant 2000). Several of these studies provided the basis for the development of habitat assessment methods used by the Tongass National Forest stream habitat surveys (U.S. Department of Agriculture 2001). Our company can provide expertise in the development and testing of techniques to monitor management activities and restoration/enhancement activities at the watershed, stream, and reach scale (Bryant and Woodsmith 2009). Past work includes generalized approaches to monitoring plans (Bryant 1995), development of specific monitoring protocols (Bryant et al. 2008; Stolnack et al. 2005), and monitoring tools for specific management effects such as fish passage at road crossings (Bryant et al. 2009). With more than 30 years of research on the life history and ecology of salmonids in freshwater habitats, I can assist in the identification of critical habitats and watersheds, sensitive species, and potential effects of a wide range of watershed and land management activities (Halupka et al. 2000). Previous research was among the first to identify the importance of large wood to salmonids in southeast Alaska (Bryant 1980; Bryant 1985), the use of beaver ponds by juvenile coho salmon (Bryant 1984), and the influence of karst landscapes on salmon (Bryant et al. 1998; Wissmar et al. 1997). Recent research described the ecology and distribution of salmonid populations in headwater streams (Bramblett et al. 2002; Bryant et al. 2007; Bryant et al. 2004b). Our experience with the range of life history and habitat requirements of salmonids in southeast Alaska can provide expertise in planning, evaluation, and monitoring of projects to restore salmon habitat in watersheds, streams, and riparian areas that have been degraded as a result of either natural or human caused disturbance (Bryant 1995; Everest et al. 1991).
