Home Firm J Gauci Borda - Our firm has been established locally in the year 1919 by ANDRÉA GAUCI BORDA. In the early 1920's the first retail outlet was established in Valletta at 168-169, Merchant's Street. Business flourished until it had to be closed down in the early 1940's when the Second World War broke out. Buildings in Valletta suffered extensive damage during the War, and the shop suffered the same fate by a direct hit in an air raid in 1942. Business resumed in the post war years when the building was newly erected.
The hardware store was subsequently taken over by Joseph Gauci Borda, in the late 1960's after the retirement of his father Andrea. In the 1980's the mainstream activity became predominantly that of a wholesaler and subsequently all retail activity from the Valletta outlet was terminated.
