The town of Letterkenny during the 1990's was the fastest growing town in Europe. This increase in population placed a huge burden on all services in the area among them the Church Services in St. Eunan's Cathedral, the only Catholic Church in the town. In order to alleviate the problem the Church of the Irish Martyrs was opened in 1994 in the townland of Ballyraine on the periphery of the town. It was the first church in Ireland to bear the name of the Irish Martyrs. In the year 2000 it was establishes as a separate parish within Letterkenny and given the name Aughaninshin after an old Franciscan Monastery in the townland of Aughaninshin.
