Matthew Stavros Web Portal I am an historian of early Japan at the University of Sydney. My research focuses primarily on cities and architecture before 1800 and I am currently completing a book manuscript on the urban history of Kyoto to 1600. Other research interests include comparative urban history, religion, material culture, and art. I trained in architectural and urban history at Kyoto University, and I completed my Ph.D. in East Asian Studies at Princeton University (2005).
