Raised in Northern California amid songs offered up to heaven, Briney soon was hooked on the gloriously earthly Betty Carter and Jobim. He explored the great legacies of Nina Simone, Shirley Horn and Helen Merrill, but Jobim, Joo Gilberto, and their compatriots became his greatest inspirations.
